Meet Our Students

See what they have to say

Gail

Student since 2019

I have been taking a ceramics class from Lisa Henry at Studio Channel Islands for over a year. I am thoroughly enjoying the class, not only are we learning all about working with clay, but also the firing process, and the many options for glazing. I have also learned that working with clay is very relaxing for me, almost therapeutic - mix that with good friends, a great teacher, and taking home items that I've made I can easily say that the 3 hours I spend at the studio are some of my favorite.

Gary

Student since 2017

Since my wife and I have had the fortunate opportunity to be in Lisa Henry's class, we have both experienced firsthand how soothing, challenging, and therapeutic her class is.

We feel honored and blessed to be in her class and learn from someone who truly enjoys teaching. We also feel blessed to be in a ceramics class that has other people that seem to feel the same way we do about the class, and life. It feels like we all support one another and cheer each other on as we work through each of our own projects.

Tory

Student since 2017

I met Lisa Henry at Studio Channel Islands Arts Alive event and for over two years I have been in her Sunday ceramics class. It's been the happiest day of my week for the past two years and counting.

The Techniques

The basics of handbuilding

pinch

Pinching is the first technique we teach in hand building. Pinching the clay is therapeutic and little pinch pot bowls are fun to use around the house. Use them to hold an afternoon treat, a bit of loose change, or some special jewelry!

slab

Slab building opens up the world of hand building. While you can shape many creations with pinching, slab building is perfect for creating straight sided shapes such as a mug or planter and for larger drape projects.

coil

Coil building is the third main technique in ceramic hand building. Coiling begins with rolling thick logs of clay and coiling them into a shape. You can either leave the coils as a surface decoration or blend them smooth.
